Covid and Moving 1.19.22

Some things have changed, some things haven’t. Without going into the recent history of covid, we’ve had to make some changes, but first here’s what’s the same:

  • great moving
  • great movers
  • great customers
  • try and distance whenever possible, so keeping customers and movers physically separated
  • do walkthroughs masked when make sense
  • wearing masks when around customers or other non-employees
  • wearing masks the rest of the time where it doesn’t interfere with breathing
  • good practices: cleanliness, ventilation and common sense.

What are we doing differently now?

Covid testing

We’ve procured a bulk supply of rapid covid tests. We’ll be testing the crew at the beginning of every job, so the crew will come in and clock onto their job and test before departing. This will make the job (billable hours) a little longer but we think it’s worth it. Since we also have a lot of these and a retail license if you (the customer) would like some let us know, we’re happy to sell you a few. If anyone tests positive we send them home before they’ve been around long enough to expose anyone. Then we re-staff as best we can.

Limiting cumulative exposure to under 15 minutes

We try and keep our time in the same air-space as the customer under 15 minutes. So typically this means a quick chat and paperwork out-doors, then we do a masked walkthrough to get the scope of the job. Then we’ll separate and do our work. We’ll communicate details via text, facetime, google-meet, or just having a talk outside. If we need to confer indoors about a detail we’ll all mask up and be quick about it. Then after the load, we’ll do another brief walkthrough and proceed to the unload. Then another unload walkthrough, delivery with the same protocols as the load, and a final walkthrough at the end and paperwork and payment out-doors.

So where do you go while we’re working? There’s a couple schemes that’ve worked lately. Sometimes the customer picks a room and just hangs out in there with the door closed while we work, and then switch to another room when we need that one. Some customers hang out in their car, go to the new location or go for a walk. Weather is a big factor here and we just problem solve as we go.

KN95 masks

We’re no stocking KN95 masks and surgical disposable masks. During more aerobic portions of the move the surgical ones are better, or if we’ve got to spend time indoors in close proximity, we may switch to the KN95s. There are so many different phases to a move job, some athletic, some not and one mask won’t cut it for all of them so we come prepared with options and switch based on context. Some crew members have their own masks, so that’s part of the solutions as well.
