Intelligent Labor Green Report: 2nd Quarter, 2019

Intelligent Labor Green Report: 2nd Quarter, 2019

Welcome to our first Green Report!

Moving can be resource heavy industry, but we’ve been working hard to lessen our environmental impact. We thought we’d share our progress with quarterly reports. This report will cover from June 22nd through September 22nd, 2019. We’ve chosen to time our reports for the equinoxes and solstices instead of the typical quarters throughout the year. If we’re going to post about our environmental work it makes sense to do so in accordance with the Earth’s cycles. Happy Autumnal Equinox everyone!

This report does not cover everything we could do or all the things we currently do within our business, but it does provide an initial snapshot of three of our biggest impact activities.

Electrified Driving

Unfortunately electric trucks are not yet available, but we do have an electric car that we use to get to on site estimates and meetings. We have a Tesla model 3 and between June 22nd and September 22nd 2019 we have driven 434.3 miles for work which comes to 105 kwh, all of which where generated by our solar installation.

Shredded Cardboard

We use a lot of cardboard and paper to pack our customers. We recycle old boxes, but we’ve come up with an even better solution – a cardboard shredder. This machine takes boxes no longer fit for use and turns them into perforated sheets of springy cardboard netting. We can then take those sheets and put them at the bottom of boxes as a cushion for fragile items instead of wads of packing paper. We got a cardboard shredder in December of 2018, but only just started tracking how much cardboard we’ve turned into packing material. In the month of September we created 23 boxes worth of shredded cardboard to be reused as packing material. We can typically replace half of our paper consumption with shredded cardboard. We’ve so far eliminated the need for 690lbs of packing paper in the month of September.

Solar Power

We took the leap and installed solar panels on top of our warehouse several years ago and it’s been wonderful. Lifetime we’ve generated 63.94 Mwh (megawatt hours) and during the June 22nd and September 22nd period we generated 6.3772 Mwh.
